The city of Norfolk, Virginia, will not become the first city in the state to ban smoking in restaurants.
The ban had been passed in October 2007, and was slated to go into effect the first week in April, but the City Council revisited the issue, and rescinded the ban at the eleventh hour. This may give Norfolk business owners reason for a bit of champagne, but is no reason for undue celebration, or complacence, by freedom lovers anywhere. Virginia is a few years behind in the general march toward fascism but the brownshirts in that state are working hard to implement pogrom progress. Well-organized and effective opposition to the new eugenics is urgently needed in Virginia as everywhere.
Australia Cans vs Bottles
Crack. Fizz. Gulp. Ahhhhhh. Is there a drinking experience more classically Australian than ripping the ring-pull off a beer? "The visceral pleasure from that first crack of a beer can is identical to popping a champagne cork," says wine and drinks writer Mike Bennie. "There's also huge appeal in the tinnie's nostalgia factor."
