Like Charlie Brown eternally tricked by Lucy as he attempts to kick the football she each year pretends she will hold, we, the American taxpayer, continually trust the politicians to make right their bad behavior.
As Edmund Contoski explains, nothing has changed even after the disasters of Katrina and, most recently, the collapse of the bridge in Minnesota. When the bridge came down the politicians in Washington couldn’t reach a television camera quickly enough to vow that they were on the job and the bridges of the country would be saved. At the first opportunity to back up their promises with actions they pulled out the football and the Americans who hoped for real change found ourselves on our backs, once again.
