Indianapolis Councilman John Barth wants to "finish the job" that he thinks was just "started" by the statewide smoking ban in restaurants. I’d suggest he look around at different city and state bans: As long as our tax money pays people to push these smoking bans the "job" will never be "finished." Give them the restaurants, they’ll want the bars. Give them the bars, they’ll want the casinos. Give them the casinos, they’ll want the private clubs to "protect the workers." Fire the workers and they’ll demand the clubs to "protect the volunteers." Give them that and they’ll demand outdoor patio dining areas and parks. Give them that and they’ll demand cars with under 18’s as passengers. Give them that and they’ll go for condominiums and public housing. Give them that and they’ll demand private apartments. Give them that and they’ll demand balconies all surrounding properties. Give them that and they’ll go after private yards and gardens and rowhomes. Give them those and they’ll go for your cabin in the woods if your teenager turns you into the smoke cops after you flush his/her pot down the toilet.
They won’t stop until smokers have been exiled to the dark side of the moon: there is no satisfying true fanaticism, particularly when it’s backed by tax and special interest money in the mega-millions.
