Toronto parent wants a book banned from school.
This article from Canada’s National Post was forwarded to me by my co-correspondent, Andrew Phillips, who resides in Canada and is a member of The Libertarian Party of Canada. "The Handmaid’s Tale" is the name of the book, and a movie starring Faye Dunaway and Robert Duvall titled "A Handmaid’s Tale" was also produced .
I have seen the movie but have not read the book. However, the same ideas encompass both.
The story moves us to a time in the future when the majority of the human female population is barren, with only a few productive young women left to propagate the race. It is, of course, the rich and powerful men who choose "handmaids" with which to breed. These "handmaids" are taken into the house and serve as handmaidens to the wives of the men who impregnate them.
One parent in Toronto, Canada, objects to the book on the grounds of the sexuality contained therein. I saw this movie at a much younger age than now, and it left a lasting impression on me, so much so that I remember it quite explicitly many years later. It impressed me, not because of the sexual content, but because of the comment it makes (then and now) on our society of "classes". The classes are divided into the rich, the military, and the downtrodden (the "handmaidens"). This division is a pre-imposed, engineered, and maintained status – just like the anti-smoking operatives who have imposed and engineered their agenda upon "we", the unsuspecting people of today.
