Prime Minister Stephen Harper shut down the Canadian parliament on Thursday, December 4th, 2008.
In an unprecedented attempt to keep his government in power, PM Stephen Harper successfully asked the unelected representative of the head of state for the authority to close down Parliament until January 26th, 2009, hoping to buy enough time to prop up the economy. The Governor General granted the unusual request to suspend Parliament.
Opposition New Democrat leader called it a sad day. "He’s trying to lock the door so that elected people cannot speak," Layton said.
There is no precedent whatsoever in Canada to take this tack to maintain power. "We are in uncharted territory," stated political scientist Ned Franks.
If the Prime Minister is trying to prop up the Canadian economy – here’s a thought – kick out the anti-tobacco moochers who are draining it dry.
