Lung Screening

The American College of Chest Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network have put out new guidelines to detect Lung Cancer. They suggest that all current and former smokers ages 55 to 74
have a CT scan or xray. Sometimes these tests can produce a false negative but early detection would prevent 8 million premature deaths.
Springfield, Mo.

Bans are bad for business and now Springfield is considering overturning it’s smoking ban by placing it on the ballot.

While that may seem to solve a lot of issues, it won’t unless it is written to allow smoking in bars and taverns who serve adults over 21. However, you can be sure the American Cancer, Lung and Heart Associations will lobby against any roll back of the ban because that is what they are paid to do.
Bribery in Mississippi

Ocean Springs aldermen took no action this week on a request for an anti-smoking ordinance.

The Mississippi Press reports that Kellie Lamb, the health promotions coordinator for Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition for Jackson County, told aldermen that being smoke-free means smoking would not be allowed in public places.

The bribe is that Ocean Springs would receive a $5,000 grant from Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition. $5,000 is a pithy amount when business is down by 30% and mom and pop stores close.

Tobacco Tax Equity Act of 2012

On Friday, Democrat Senators …. Durbin and Frank Lautenberg introduced legislation (S. 3081), the "Tobacco Tax Equity Act of 2012", that would "equalize" the Federal excise tax on all tobacco products at the same per unit level as that on cigarettes.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Finance Committee.
The text of this bill is not yet available on THOMAS (Library of Congress)

It appears that this bill would sharply increase the federal tax rate on smokeless tobacco products and some other OTP, but don’t know if e-cigarettes are included.
Chris Snowden Talks About The Sin Taxes

Governments have long relied on indirect taxes on consumer goods as a source of revenue. ‘Sinful’ items such as alcohol and tobacco have traditionally been taxed punitively and some have called for new taxes on fatty foods and sugary drinks, as well as a minimum price on a unit of alcohol.
He goes on to tell you why "sin taxes" don’t work. A excellent article.
