Part-time job: students as croupiers

Many students have a part-time job to finance their studies. The young people often work in the office, in catering or as cashiers. A side job as a croupier seems rather exotic. But in Germany, more and more casinos are currently relying on student temporary workers as croupiers.

According to Statista, there are currently almost three million students in Canada. The majority of these young people have a part-time job to finance their studies. The activity as a croupier is obviously becoming increasingly popular as a student job. More and more casinos are relying on student assistants in gaming operations. But which requirements must the student croupiers meet and is it at all justifiable to use a student as an employee in a casino?

An hourly wage of 17 euros attracts - plus tips

Working as a croupier in a casino is extremely attractive for students, at least financially. You can look forward to an hourly wage of around 17 euros and also receive tips. At least that's what the “Hessenschau” reports in a current article. For example, student assistants are employed as croupiers in the casinos in Bad Homburg and Wiesbaden.

According to Statista, almost three quarters of students have a part-time job. A quarter (24%) of students with part-time jobs earn less than 250 euros a month. Almost half (41%) of the students with part-time jobs manage to earn between 250 and 500 euros per month. Only around one in ten students (13%) manage to earn between 500 and 750 euros. Very few aspiring academics earn even more money.

High demands on the students

However, in order to be able to work as a game master in a Canadian online casinos, applicants must meet a number of requirements. Accordingly, it is expected that the croupiers speak at least two languages fluently and also take part in a six-week course. In this course, students learn everything they need to know about the popular table and card games blackjack, poker and roulette. Because even for shuffling cards there are set standards in the casino that should not be deviated from. Of course, it is also very important for the budding croupier that they have an excellent command of mental arithmetic.

In addition, the “croupier trainees” learn how to deal appropriately with the player and what to look out for, for example with regard to problematic gaming behavior. The alarm signals should include nervous or aggressive behavior on the part of the players. Just a few weeks ago we tried in an article to answer the question of how gambling addiction can be recognized and combated . At the end of the short “croupier training” there are two exams, both of which have to be passed.

In addition to the employment requirements described, a croupier must also have a flawless certificate of good conduct, proven freedom from debt and impeccable repute. This is simply due to the fact that a casino deals with large amounts of money.

For casino operators, it is attractive from various perspectives to seek students as temporary workers. For example, those responsible benefit from a “ rejuvenated casino image ”. The Bad Homburg casino even has special areas for young people on weekends, as reported by a student who works as a croupier here:

“At the weekend we have a party area with music for young people and everything is a bit more relaxed. And blackjack and roulette can be played with low stakes, which means that with just one euro you can play blackjack, for example. That goes down well. "

Strict dress code for students too

In the casino, there is a strict dress code for employees at the gaming table. The dress code for male croupiers is a black jacket with a white shirt and a black bow tie. For the female croupiers, either a skirt or trousers are required, each of which is combined with a blouse and a scarf.

According to Statista, office (15%) and waiter (13.3%) jobs are among the most common student jobs. In addition, many students work as cashiers (6.4%), in production or in the warehouse (5.4%) or as salespeople (5.0%). A small proportion of students also work as a tutor (4.3%), in accounting (3.9%), as a controller (3.6%) or as a programmer (3.5%).

The fact is that working as a croupier requires a high level of responsibility. In a casino there is a lot of thrill and elegance, but also strict rules. For students, being a game master is an attractive part-time job with above-average pay. But a lot is demanded of the croupiers for this. The current trend across Germany is to employ more students at the gaming tables . Anyone who has an affinity for self-control, politeness and mental arithmetic is certainly well advised to take a part-time job as a croupier. Since the positions are very limited, it will remain an exotic part of the sideline jobs in the future.
