Tobacco firms kept quiet on polonium role in cigarettes

Philip Morris and others failed to publish internal studies into lethal substance

By Andy Rowell

Some of the world's biggest tobacco firms researched the lethal radioactive substance polonium – present in cigarettes – over a 40-year period but never published the results, according to a new scientific article.

Polonium-210: basic facts and questions

"Po-210 emits alpha particles and is 5,000 times more radioactive than radium. The half-life of Po-210 is 138 days"

"For the general public, normal hygiene measures (such as thorough washing of hands and washing of fruit/vegetables before consumption) are sufficient."
http://www.who.int/ionizing_radiation/p ... index.html

Polonium-210 has a
half-life of 138 days, and it decays to
stable lead-206 by emitting an alpha
particle.

"Because it is produced during the decay of naturally ubiquitous uranium-238, polonium-210 is widely distributed in small amounts in the earth’s crust"

" Polonium-210 is also emitted to the atmosphere during the calcining of phosphate rock as part of the production of elemental phosphorous. Although direct root uptake by plants is generally small, polonium-210 can be deposited on broad-leaved vegetables."
http://www.ead.anl.gov/pub/doc/polonium.pdf

"The process of calcination derives its name from its most common application, the decomposition of calcium carbonate (limestone) to calcium oxide (lime). The product of calcination is usually referred to in general as "calcine," regardless of the actual minerals undergoing thermal treatment. Calcination is carried out in furnaces or reactors (sometimes referred to as kilns) of various designs including shaft furnaces."

So Polonium 210 has a half life of 138 days, assuming that the apatite rock is crushed onsite and spread immediately.

"N. tabacum requires a frost-free period of 100 to 130 days from date of transplanting to maturity in the field"

Then 6 weeks hanging in a barn , then curing for a while, then around 2 and half years aging before it is despatched, if I remember correctly. Not to mention hanging about in a warehouse waiting to be delivered to the shops.

Personally, I worry more about vegetables grown in the same kind of fertilizer and delivered fresh every day.

Still, if the WHO says not to worry, just wash them, that must be OK

Mind you, I should add, in experiments I did this summer, you get a much better plant using lots of well rotted farmyard manure rather than commercial fertilizer, they go a very peculiar shade of cabbage green with thick leaves.

Anyway, I don't trust the tobacco companies, from the few documents I've seen they were perfectly normal companies, and very pleased to find the nicotinic acid, up to about the late 1950's.
Then they seem to get decidedly shifty after being called drug pushers and murderers.

smoking in a home with average levels of radon (2 picocuries per liter) would produce the risk equivalent of over 1000 X-rays per year, far greater than either risk alone.

The U.S. national annual background dose for humans is approximately 360 mrem. A mrem, or millirem, is a standard measure of radiation dose. Examples of radiation doses from common medical procedures are:

Chest x-ray (14 x 17 inch area) – 15 mrem

Dental x-ray (3 inch diameter area) – 300 mrem

Spinal x-ray (14 x 17 inch area) – 300 mrem

Thyroid uptake study – 28,000 mrem to the thyroid

Thyroid oblation – 18,000,000 mrem to the thyroid

Average Annual Total
361 mrem/year

Tobacco (If You Smoke, Add ~ 280 mrem)

Not quite 1 dental xray for a whole years smoking ehh!

or

Thyroid oblation – 18,000,000 mrem to the thyroid /shrinking the thyroid

Tobacco (If You Smoke, Add ~ 280 mrem)

18,000,000 / 280 = roughly 64,000 years of equivalent years of smoking!

I came across this article on ‘Climate Change’ today which I found quite interesting:

A former NASA scientist has described global warming as “nonsense”…

“This is not the way science works. If you tell me that you have a theory there is a teapot in orbit between the earth and the moon, it’s not up to me to prove it does not exist, it’s up to you to provide the reproducible scientific evidence for your theory.

“Such evidence for the man-made climate change theory has not been forthcoming.”
