January 30, 2002 - RADIATION FROM MEDICAL PROCEDURES IN THE PATHOGENESIS OF CANCER AND ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE - Does smoking cause lung cancer" We realise that just asking the question (as opposed to making an emphatic statement) gets antismokers to go ballistic against heresy. However, we are not talking about religion, fanaticism, or junk science. According to real science, the question is still open. Here is further support for the co-factor point we made on our recent position paper. Dr. Gofman is a scientist with impressive credentials (that include both a PhD and an MD, important scientific discoveries, and retirement as a full professor from Berkeley) -- and no connection with Big Tobacco. He states that ionising radiation in even low-dose medical applications is a necessary co-factor in the majority of cases of both cancer and ischemic heart disease. For example, he states that in 1993, radiation was a co-factor in 63% of the deaths from ischemic heart disease in males and in 78% of females. For all cancer deaths combined in 1988, he says radiation was a co-factor in 74% of male cancer deaths and 50% of all female cancer deaths.

Although he does not deny that smoking is an important co-factor in lung cancer, smoking is not as significant as a co-factor as medical radiation is. Moreover, in the absence of radiation, smoking would need to be combined with other important co-factors (such as genes, or diet) to cause lung cancer. Despite the impeccable credentials, however, Gofman has received only sporadic attention from media and medical establishment. Obviously the government, the physicians, and the big medical radiation supply corporations don't like what he has to say. People must believe that smoking is the main cause of lung cancer – and that political agenda must override any consideration on integrity of science, truth, and information -- let alone menial values such as liberty and choice of lifestyle.

ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE "It's possible that the people with positive attitude produce lower levels of stress hormones, which helps protect them from disease," says Diane M. Becker, Sc.D., M.P.H., senior author of the study and director of Hopkins' Center for Health Promotion. "In future studies, we'd like to examine whether adding pleasurable activities to the lives of this population affects heart disease risk."

Smoking as a cause of heart disease was always pretty much of a scam and the attempt to link the two had more to do with admitting the American Heart Association into the anti-tobacco rackets than with health.  Now comes a study that not only brushes aside smoking as a cause of heart attack but seems to indicate smokers, who suffer less from hypertension than do non-smokers, are actually benefiting their tickers as they puff away.  Nothing reduces stress more than a good smoke as even the anti-tobacco fanatics acknowledge.

ASTHMA LINKED TO ENGLISH SPEAKERS - "Scientists are still puzzled as to why asthma is on the increase and why there is such geographical variation. Potential causes include climate, dust mites, pet hair, diet and exposure to dust." A number of countries now have higher smoking rates than many of the English-speaking countries, but asthma still is largely a mystery. How much of a mystery" Check out the headline of another recent article listed on the page we link to above: "Sunflower oil may contribute to rise in childhood asthma". Such a sea of uncertainty should drown hysterical fears about smokers as a veritable fountainhead of asthma for those around them. But it won't, as we all know by now. Too much antitobacco money at stake. The frauds on smoking must flow. For more information on smoking and asthma, click here.
DIET AND HYGENE COULD BE BEHIND ASTHMA EPIDEMIC - "The increase was not just linked to allergies. The incidence of viral wheeze, the response to a virus infection, rose from nine per cent to 19 per cent. The rise in respiratory problems could not be linked to household risk factors such as passive smoking, gas cooking, pets or low parental education attainment because those factors declined over the period, the team reports." - Although reason and scientific realities are irrelevant to antismoking corruption & hysteria, here is another voice that belays the passive smoke fraud.
VIRUS MAY INCREASE RISK OF HEAD AND NECK CANCER - Despite the antismoking claims, smoking is NOT the only thing associated with mouth and throat cancer. Alcohol and HPV also are strongly associated.
CONFERENCE TOLD GENES INCREASE RISK OF LUNG DISEASE - "Australian researchers have told a conference in Brisbane that there are genes which increase the risk of lung disease." ... "Professor Michael Abramson from Melbourne's Monash University says knowing about the genetic link is a big step forward in working out what causes emphysema." ... . "I think we've had our picture of the disease distorted by the predominant role of cigarette smoking and I think we need to recognise that as in the case of most human diseases, there's an interaction between genes and the environment," he said."
RISK OF ASTHMA - The antitobacco cartel is blaming ETS for asthma though, of course, there is no proof of that. However, could it be the proliferation of infant vaccines, as this doctor speculates" As in the case of cancer, the truth is that we do not know.
CONFOUNDING BY INFECTION / THE HEALTH ESTABLISHMENT EXPLOITS CONFOUNDING - For over 50 years, the health establishment has suppressed research on infection in chronic diseases, and purposely used defective statistical analyses to falsely blame smoking for diseases actually caused by infection.
HELICOBACTER PYLORI CAUSES ULCERS & STOMACH CANCER - Helicobacter pylori and ulcers: a paradigm revised. Nancy A Lynch. Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).

During Feb. 7-9, 1994, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, together with the Office of Medical Applications of Research of the National Institutes of Health, convened a Consensus Development Conference on Helicobacter pylori in Peptic Ulcer Disease, cosponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, admitting that Helicobacter pylori infection is the cause of gastritis and ulcers. (Perhaps not coincidentally, a few weeks later on Feb. 21, 1994, Mary Lasker croaked.) And subsequently, a working group on schistosomes, liver flukes and Helicobacter pylori of the International Agency for Research on Cancer met in Lyon, France, and issued a report concluding that "infection of humans with H. pylori is causally associated with the risk of developing gastric cancer" (Vol. 61 of the IARC Monographs, 7-14 June 1994).

How the public was brainwashed about heart disease
CHLAMYDIA PNEUMONIAE AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE - Presentation by Carol Thompson: Here is the US Centers for Disease Control's own review of the evidence implicating Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in cardiovascular disease. Note the odds ratio of 10 (5-22) that was found in a prospective study, of antibodies to Cp at baseline versus atherosclerosis at autopsy about 8 years later, among young men. This study was associated with the CDC itself.

This high odds ratio for Chlamydia pneumoniae, together with the high prevalence of Cp infection in the population, means that it is a perfect setup for confounding. And, ALL of the anti-smokers' studies blaming smoking for cardiovascular disease are defective, because they have failed to take Chlamydia pneumoniae into proper account.

IARC Monograph 64 summary - Human papillomaviruses

"A recent report that 93 percent of invasive cervical cancers worldwide contain human papillomavirus (HPV) may be an understatement," due to technical problems. On reanalysis of the material, HPV was found in most supposedly HPV-negative cases, and "the worldwide HPV prevalence in cervical carcinomas is 99.7 percent." WHAT DISEASES DO ADENO-ASSOCIATED VIRUSES CAUSE"
6 'BUGS' LINKED TO HEART DISEASE - Infectious bugs may not just make you feel bad. Infections like herpes simplex and hepatitis A may also lead to cardiovascular disease and the deaths related to it. That's the finding of a new study, conducted jointly by LDS Hospital, Johns Hopkins University and the Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center.
ETIOLOGY OF HIGH INCIDENCE OF NON-SMOKING FEMALE LUNG CANCER DISCOVERED IN CHINA - "Experts in epidemic diseases discovered that female adenocarcinoma of lung has close relations with domestic environment pollution. Stove fueled with coal inside the bedroom may cause 53.8 percent of the danger for women to suffer lung cancer. Cooking with coal as fuel for over 15 years may increase the danger up to 125 percent. However, cooking with gas may reduce the danger of suffering lung cancer by 70 percent. The more one fries and cooks, the more chances of suffering lung cancer she will have. Stimulus to eyes and throat when cooking may increase the danger of female lung cancer by 17.4 percent.."
PNEUMOCYSTIS CARINII INFECTION LINKED TO SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME - "Pneumocystis carinii infection is associated with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), researchers report in the December 1999 issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases."

"Dr. Sergio L. Vargas, of the University of Chile in Santiago, and multinational colleagues point out that there is well-documented serological evidence that primary P. carinii infection is common in very young immunocompetent children. To determine whether there is histological support for that assumption, they evaluated lung autopsy samples from 534 consecutive pediatric patients at Santiago hospitals who did not have AIDS or malignancies."

One of the most outrageous lies about ETS is its "association" with SIDS. Even antismoking-persuaded scientists involved in this research condemn this fraudulent association. Used by several governments as if it was reality to justify smoking prohibition. For more information about smoking and SIDS, click here.

doc04.gif (346 bytes)LIKELIHOOD OF EAR INFECTIONS IN CHILDREN MAY BE INHERITED - "Babies' vulnerability to ear infections appears largely inherited, according to a study that suggests doctors might want to closely watch siblings of children who are prone to such ailments." ... "Middle ear infections are the most common illness in children next to the common cold." Then, the politically correct, but low-key statement "Previous research has shown that environmental factors can increase a child's vulnerability, including cigarette smoke and bottle feeding rather than breast-feeding,"  Middle ear infection is in fact one of the stalking horses of the campaign against passive smoke. It is no wonder that this study was not reported by the mass-media: it casts doubts on the credibility of antitobacco. For much more evidence exonerating passive smoke from the diseases attributed to it, click here.
A NEW GERM THEORY - Presentation by Carol Thompson: It's the anti-smokers who lied about the health risks of smoking. They falsely blame smoking for diseases caused by infection, including ulcers, stomach cancer, cervical cancer, and especially cardiovascular disease. They purposely omit these infectious risk factors from their studies, or use deficient detection of them, to falsely implicate smoking by means of what epidemiologists call "confounding."

This means that while smoking appears to be associated with the disease, the real cause is that smokers have higher rates of infection due to their lower average socioeconomic status. And, the example of cervical cancer, which they now know is 100% caused by human papillomavirus, proves that their usual technique of "adjusting for social class" and other risk factors does not eliminate confounding. Only complete detection of the infectious risk factor can do this, and when this is done, there is no risk associated with smoking.

This article is a review of some of the numerous supposedly chronic noninfectious diseases that are now known or suspected to be caused by infection. Note that many of them have been blamed on smoking, and every one of them is presumably, if not proven to be, confounded.
