Nicotine drink quenches cravings of smokers
25 May 2002 A 'nicotine substitute' bottled water product is poised to arrive in USA stores by June. The California manufacturers hope to have it available in Canada by July or August. Who is being targeted for sales? "We're going after the smoker. We're going after an age group of smokers that cannot stop smoking because they're addicted to it." We'll see how many are willing to give up the pleasure and satisfaction they find in 'lighting up' and replace it with a glass of water. The pleasure factor doesn't seem to register with those who want to make a buck off smokers. The redefinition of the word "addiction" to accomodate the smokefree agenda is having some spin-offs that won't be welcome by Big Drugs. After all, the 'reformation' of smokers is supposed to be their exclusive territory. [the product] "not only provides a safer delivery method for people who are addicted to nicotine, but also people concerned about second-hand smoke. "No one has ever died off of second-hand water." Cashing in on the myth created about secondhand smoke to produce guilt as a way to get people to quit isn't being missed by this manufacturer either. The availability of 'nicotine water' here depends on Health Canada's OK. So far, the only non prescription alternatives available are gum and 'the patch' - both manufactured by pharmaceutical companies.
Tough smoke laws snuffed -
Alberta
With the recent tax increase of $2.25 a pack benefitting Alberta coffers, it doesn't make too much sense to 'slam the door' on places to use the product. With this kind of money rolling in, 'health' is definitely running in second place. Those who have been following what's going on know that this issue really stopped being about 'health' quite some time ago. "...Premier Ralph Klein recently said it was ridiculous to suddenly tell an old-timer who'd been having beers in a small-town hotel for years that he no longer could light up." You bet it is Premier Klein, and by the way, how do those old-timers get to be so "old" in the first place? Obviously the dire warnings about their preferred lifestyle makes liars out of health fanatics. ADULTS who have been happily smoking for years, and have made the informed choice to continue to do so, have had enough of this war declared on them. Here's A DECLARATION written by a smoker who eloquently puts into words what's happening to relationships these days; it's well worth the read. Not everyone is prepared to sacrifice themselves on the altar of some utopian vision/theory of the 'greater good'. Those who would exclude run the risk of being excluded. Proposed Ontario Tobacco Tax
Hike Jumping on the "balance the budget" by punishing the 'sinners' bandwagon, the new Premier of Ontario is set to put that Province's fiscal affairs in order by picking the pockets of smokers. The western Provinces enacted the same 'bash the smokers' tax measure recently. At least Ontario isn't being phoney about why they're doing it - they need the money and smokers are today's socially acceptable whipping boy, "The Ontario government is considering raising
tobacco taxes by as much as $1-billion annually to help bail it out of this
year's budget problems and bankroll new spending promises made by Ernie Eves,
the new Premier." The obsequiousness to 'health' comes from former Health Minister Elizabeth Witmer (now Deputy Premier and Education Minister) who, " .... has always advocated for measures to reduce smoking," Seems the lady has bought into the theory that smokers (and others with lifestyles that need 'correction') really want a "commitment device", "In the long run, smokers end up happy that they
were taxed out of smoking. .... Rational economics would say that the higher
the taxes, the sadder smokers would get, Gruber said this week over the
telephone. [Jonathan Gruber is an economics
professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a former deputy
assistant secretary for economic policy in the Treasury Department]
But almost every smoker wants to quit. They want what we call in economics a
`commitment device' to help them quit." More reality distortion from the elites who appear to live in a remote ivory tower, completely separate from, and out of touch with, the 'regular' folks. What a 'boon' for governments to shore up depleted revenue coffers by utilizing flavour-of-the-day lifestyle correction 'commitment devices'. These tax 'devices' will 'help' the designated unfortunates whose manner of living has been turned over to their 'betters' to decide. The serfs must be delivered from temptation - free will and willpower are about to become obsolete. Mac's up in smoke? -
Manitoba With Manitoba's stated intention to follow behind Saskatchewan and compel retailers to hide cigarettes from the sight of The Children, Mac's Convenience Stores has announced their intention to pull plans for expansion in that Province. "Mac's Convenience Stores will pull the plug on
plans for 20 to 30 new stores over the next three years if Manitoba passes
legislation forcing retailers to hide cigarettes from view, says a Mac's
official. Manitoba had better keep an eye on the lawsuit going forward in Saskatchewan to overturn exactly the same type of government interference. Governments these days have been listening to too many elitist theories regarding tobacco control. One thing is obvious; they severely underestimate the intelligence of those they are trying to reach. Being manipulated produces resentment, and no one catches on faster than The Children. Ask any parent. Hide 'it' from The Children
Congratulations to Rothmans, Benson & Hedges, who have filed a suit in the Court of Queen's Bench in Saskatoon. They are suing the Saskatchewan government over its recent decision to prohibit vendors from displaying cigarettes in their stores. "The province's Tobacco Control Act, which came into effect on March 11, is part of its "de-normalization" strategy to prevent children and teens from picking up the habit. The act forces retailers to remove cigars, cigarettes and chewing tobacco from view or prohibit anyone under 18 from entering their stores." Globe and Mail, 10 May 2002 To the displeasure of fanatic smokefree proponents, tobacco is still a LEGAL product. As such, it has LEGAL protection; a 1995 Supreme Court of Canada decision ensured that its availability at retail outlets can be displayed. Saskatchewan is spitting in the face of this Judgement. Call this asinine behaviour control experiment's goal by its real name - prohibition. Good Luck to Rothmans, Benson & Hedges in keeping their product on the shelves - and visible. The Children these days are far too intelligent to fall for the tired old 'out of sight, out of mind' ploy. P.E.I. considers smoking ban It looks like the 'Campaign leader' Pat McGowan, Mayor of Montague, has a tremendous superiority complex - and it shows, "For now, I'll let them smoke in their homes, but I'm a school teacher, and I'd really like to see them stop smoking at home, too. I have kids giving me hugs in the morning and they smell of smoke so bad. It's a shame." Is the scent of smoke the most unpleasant thing, in your opinion, you've ever smelled Ms. McGowan? The stink of fascism is much worse. There is no valid basis for the hysteria created regarding secondhand smoke no matter how often a lie is repeated in the hope it will evolve into a 'truth'. Playing the 'kid card' is reprehensible and disgusting, and placing The Children in a 'squeeze' between anti-smoking fanatics and their parents is beneath contempt. "....I'll let them smoke in their homes....."; how magnanimous of you madam. Is it still OK to use the bathroom without permission? "The far-reaching policy would outlaw smoking not only in the malls, restaurants and office buildings that are the usual focus of such bans, but also in public parks, the waterfront and even busy streets." This isn't prohibition? Let the Prince Edward Island Government know what you think. Non residents might like to direct their comments to the Minister of Tourism. Spending travel/vacation dollars in a place more interested in advancing a social engineering experiment than accommodating visitor preferences isn't too appealing. events Omigod! These Ontario converts to healthism can't stand the idea that $25.00 buys a dispensation for hosts to accommodate guests with a LEGAL preference at private functions. "Every Saturday night there's a birthday party. Friday night there's an anniversary party," said Brian Hatton, director of environmental health. "They're using this as an excuse to allow smoking in a room within the establishment .... The region exempts about 290 one-time events a year, each for a $25 fee. " There are to be NO GOOD TIMES for anyone who dares to flaunt the new social order, even if their attendance is specifically requested and extra effort made to ensure they're comfortable. Who cares about relatives and friends whose preferred LEGAL method of relaxation doesn't fit in with the 'TOBACCO smokefree agenda? Nobody's really concerned about the boozers or illegal 'hits' off premise. Nope; make today's social 'deviant- flavour-of the-month' the target for political enhancement. Please tell us Mr. Hatton - how many of these PRIVATE functions have you been invited to, and did you refuse to attend if smoking was allowed? Personal relationships, and what's needed to keep them, don't appear to be this 'gentleman's' strong point. Please Mr. Hatton, tell us that you've decided to retire from political/public life. Your own life seems to be in dire need of full attention. Cig price spike sends puffers on patch
run - Winnipeg "With cigarettes selling for as much as $9 a pack, Nicorette gum and NicoDerm patches are flying off pharmacy shelves as smokers desperately look for anything that will help them kick the habit." Pharmaceutical companies are laughing their way straight to the bank as government falls into line with the anti-smoking strategy of taxing people into 'good' behaviour. For a thoroughly researched and well documented look at what's at stake, check Big Drug's NICOTINE WAR "At stake is the control of the largest market known to humanity, with an estimated 1.2 billion customers on this planet. The projected financial returns to the pharmaceutical multinationals from smoking "cessation" (which, in reality, is not cessation, but a different way to assume nicotine) are truly staggering, and beyond the imagination of the layperson; and they are well worth the multi-billion dollar investments by the multinationals in the corruption of international and national institutions, politicians, as well as media control." How well do 'cessation' products work? Physician assisted (prescription) or off the shelf - not very well at all. In fact, some of them can be fatal. The 'secret' to successfully quitting smoking is the very personal decision to do so, arrived at without constant harassment and obvious attempts at coercion. People ENJOY smoking. There's no PLEASURE factor in a patch, pill, or chewing gum, and that's something the healthists and pharmaceuticals can't get their minds around. To those who are prepared to give up all risks for a few extra breaths of whatever this 'life' represents to you, what's the problem? Do you need a tax law to embrace the sterile world of healthism? Looks like a new 'religion' is off and running. To governments addicted to tobacco tax, what are you going to do if LEGAL smokers are extinguished? The new 'criminal' class you will have created, who find what they want elsewhere, are hardly likely to be swayed by your revenue need for social programs. After all, we would be 'beneficiaries' of one of them. |
