Further Information Two hundred and forty eight pages to comply with the “public heath” ideology that tobacco kills in any form. This time cigars (and pipes too) are the target. The NCI report wants to demonstrate that those who smoke pipes and cigars are, all in all, no better off than those who smoke cigarettes.
“Cigar smoking can cause oral, esophageal, laryngeal, and lung cancers. Regular cigar smokers who inhale, particularly those who smoke several cigars per day, have an increased risk of coronary heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”
“Regular cigar smokers have risks of oral and esophageal cancers similar to those of cigarette smokers, but they have lower risks of lung and laryngeal cancer, coronary heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”
In practical and political language, that means that cigar and pipe smokers (who sometimes think that they are more “sophisticated” or “classier” smokers than their “proletarian” cigarette smoking counterparts), are equally targeted by the antismoking propaganda and prohibition machine. In fact:
“The risks of tobacco smoke exposure are similar for all sources of tobacco smoke, and the magnitude of the risks experienced by cigar smokers is proportionate to the nature and intensity of their exposure.”
In the entire report, of course, there is not one mention of a single hard fact that can scientifically demonstrate causality. Rather, there is a great deal of alarmistic propaganda on the expanded use of cigars by the youth, and against cigar and lifestyle publications, and calls for information suppression, regulation to extinction, and scary warning labels.
